Constitutional Geography of Australia 1836
The Province of South Australia
In the year 1834 South Australia was founded by
Act of Parliament (15th August 1834), as
a Province with its own constitution and laws
specially enacted.
The 26th parallel of south latitude constituted
its northern limit, and the 132nd and 141st
meridians its western and eastern boundaries
respectively. Like Western Australia, it
commenced as a settlement of free colonists.
The little strip of land south of the 26th
meridian and west of the proclaimed boundary of
South Australia, was known as 'No Mans Land'.
New Zealand and Victoria
New Zealand was proclaimed an independent Colony
in 1841. Norfolk Island was attached to Van
Diemen's Land in 1844.
Victoria became a separate Colony in 1851, the
border with NSW being the River Murray.
